In the wake of a broken relationship I spent many nights examining its broken pieces descending YouTube rabbit holes seeking answers for a broken heart. I discovered and explored some MGTOW stuff for the first time. Although I could see the validity and sympathise with some of their arguments it was essentially encouraging men to give up on women and go their own way. I wasn\u2019t willing to give up on women; I just wanted to know why things went wrong with this<\/em> woman and to learn from it.<\/p>\n

The teacher I was searching for came along in the form of a YouTube channel called Coach Red Pill. \u201cCoach\u201d was a middle-aged American (actually from Chile) living in Ukraine who spoke eloquently, enthusiastically and with experience. Sat in his chair speaking to a camera set up from different angles he began to speak about the one question a man needs to ask a girl when he starts dating.<\/p>\n

\u201cAsk her what her relationship with her father was like\u201d, he asserted. You\u2019d have to draw that information out casually and subtly but at the earliest opportunity, he explained.<\/p>\n

His broad rationale was that if a girl had a bad relationship with her father then she\u2019ll have a bad relationship with you – so you should run the fuck away. You see, the girl who I\u2019d just ended the relationship with had grown up with an alcoholic father. And now she had an alcohol problem. Obviously, this made for a dysfunctional relationship between us, just like the one she was raised in. Ecstatic highs turned to despairing lows and I\u2019d decided this wasn\u2019t what I wanted my future to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoach\u201d was only highlighting the need for men to be aware of women with \u2018daddy-issues\u2019. Nothing ground-breaking there, except for fools like me. But his life advice for young men was cocky and politically-incorrect. On a spectrum it would be the opposite side of woke culture. It was a bit like how the auld fellas talk down at the local boozer, a provocative version of Jordan Peterson with jokes. I didn\u2019t always agree with everything he said but it was always thought-provoking. I subscribed to the channel and continued to watch his content over the years.<\/p>\n

Then the war in Ukraine started.<\/p>\n

Coach Red Pill naturally started speaking about the turmoil surrounding him and switched to posting content under his real name, Gonzalo Lira, the Chilean born, dual American citizen who had a career in filmography and a wife and children in Ukraine. He became an on-the-ground source of information. And just as his previous videos had been unapologetic and counter to social narratives, his views on the war were too.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The western mainstream media portrayed Ukraine\u2019s president Zelensky as heroic; Gonzalo portrayed him as the head puppet of a thuggish regime. The western media stated Russia was losing the war; Gonzalo stated Russia was winning the war decisively. The western media stated Russia was committing war crimes against citizens; Gonzalo explained why these claims are propaganda and that the Russians were conducting the war with more care than the Americans had in Iraq (with some justification when considering the US carried out more airstrikes in the first 24 hours of the Iraq invasion as part of shock and awe than Russia have in Ukraine to date).<\/p>\n

Then Russian media picked up and broadcast one of his clips, which Gonzalo had created as he walked through the streets of a deserted Kiev. He appeared worried for his safety only because military-grade weapons had been handed out \u201cwilly-nilly\u201d by Zelensky to anyone and anybody, so criminals now roamed the streets with AK-47s. An American in Kiev criticizing the Ukrainian government worked well for the Russian state narrative.<\/p>\n
